2Baba, formerly known as 2face Idibia, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter, record producer, and philanthropist, renowned for his solo debut album, Face 2 Face.
He is considered the most influential figure in the Nigerian music scene, credited for his significant contributions to Nigerian pop music during the 2000s.
Early life and Education
Innocent Idibia MON was born on September 18, 1975, in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, and hails from the Idoma ethnic group in Benue State, central Nigeria. He attended Mount Saint Gabriel Secondary School in Makurdi before enrolling in Business Administration at the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu (IMT), in Enugu State.
After his academic pursuits, 2Baba left formal education to pursue his music career. By 1996, he was already composing music and recording jingles, notably at the GB Fan Club at Enugu State Broadcasting Services (ESBS). Initially performing under the stage name “2Face,” he later changed it to “2Baba” in 2016, stating that the adjustment was to distinguish his personal life from his professional endeavors.
Career
While studying at IMT, Idibia kickstarted his music journey by performing alongside Blackface Naija, his classmate from secondary school, and Faze. Together, they formed the trio band known as Plantashun Boiz. Under Dove Records, owned by Nelson Brown, the band released two albums: “Body and Soul” in 2000 and “Sold Out” in 2003. However, the group disbanded in 2004, leading 2Baba to resume his solo career.
His debut solo album, “Face 2 Face” (2004), garnered positive reviews from critics and was hailed as the greatest Nigerian debut album of the 21st century by a solo artist. This was followed by “Grass 2 Grace” (2006). Subsequently, he parted ways with Kennis Music and established his own record label, Hypertek Digital. In 2009, he experimented with his music style with the release of “The Unstoppable,” followed by an international edition in 2010, which earned him two awards at the 2010 SoundCity Music Video Awards.
Continuing his musical journey, 2Baba remained a prominent figure in the Nigerian music industry. He continued to release hit songs and albums, solidifying his status as one of the country’s most celebrated artists. Beyond his music career, 2Baba also ventured into philanthropy, using his platform to advocate for social causes and contribute to various charitable initiatives.
In 2004, 2Baba’s departure from the band “Plantashun Boiz” led to the group’s split, sparking a feud with his former bandmates who blamed him for the disbandment. This rift resulted in a public exchange of blame between 2Baba and former bandmate Faze on various tracks on their respective solo albums.
Additionally, BlackFace alleged that 2Baba performed songs written by both of them, leading to a legal dispute that was later resolved in court. The hit song “African Queen” also became a subject of controversy between 2Baba, his record label Kennis Music, and former bandmate Blackface. Blackface publicly accused 2Baba of stealing the song from him, claiming he wrote it while they were still in the band. Kennis Music eventually agreed to give Blackface writing credits for the song and pay him royalties from its proceeds.
On January 25, 2017, 2Baba announced via Instagram that he would lead a nationwide protest on February 5, 2017, against policies implemented by the Presidency of Muhammadu Buhari. Despite attempts by the administration to halt the protest, citing security concerns, 2Baba persisted with publicity for the event on social media. However, he later canceled the protest in February 2017, citing security reasons amid rumors that he was pressured by security agencies.
Personal life
2Baba has been married to Nigerian actress Annie Macaulay-Idibia since 2012. They had a civil ceremony in Dubai on March 23, 2013, and have seven children together.
Influence
2Baba’s influence on the Nigerian music scene is profound and far-reaching. As one of the pioneers of contemporary Nigerian pop music, he has played a significant role in shaping the sound and style of the industry. His ability to blend various genres such as Afrobeat, reggae, hip-hop, and R&B has contributed to the richness and diversity of Nigerian music.
Beyond his musical contributions, 2Baba’s influence extends to his role as a cultural icon and advocate for social change. He has used his platform to address social issues such as poverty, corruption, and youth empowerment, inspiring others to do the same. His philanthropic efforts, including the establishment of the 2Baba Foundation, have had a positive impact on communities across Nigeria.
Moreover, 2Baba’s longevity in the industry and his ability to consistently deliver hit songs have earned him respect and admiration from both fans and fellow artists. He serves as a mentor and role model for aspiring musicians, showcasing the importance of perseverance, creativity, and authenticity in the pursuit of success.
