Andrew Tate is an American-British figure known for his presence on social media, his entrepreneurial endeavors, and his past career as a professional kickboxer.
However, his contentious remarks have led to his removal from several social media platforms and raised concerns about the promotion of misogynistic perspectives among his audience, particularly young males.
Early life and Education
Emory Andrew Tate III was born on December 1, 1986, at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He comes from a multiracial background, with his father, Emory Tate, being an African American chess international master, and his mother, Eileen Tate, being White English and working as a catering assistant. Tate grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and Goshen, Indiana, before moving to Luton, England, with his mother and siblings after his parents’ divorce. He attended Halyard High School and Luton Sixth Form College. Tate was raised in the Christian faith.
Career
In 2005, Tate began training in boxing and various martial arts while working in the television advertising industry to sustain himself. By November 2008, he earned the rank of the seventh-best light heavyweight kickboxer in the UK according to the International Sport Kickboxing Association (ISKA). The following year, Tate secured his first championship titles, including the British ISKA Full Contact Cruiserweight Championship and the top rank in his division across Europe. Known by the moniker “King Cobra,” Tate continued his success, winning his first ISKA world title in 2011 after a rematch against Jean-Luc Benoît, whom he had previously lost to by decision. Despite a setback in 2012, where he lost in the Enfusion championship tournament, Tate rebounded in 2013 by claiming his second ISKA world title in a 12-round match against Vincent Petitjean, thus becoming a world champion in two weight divisions. His achievements culminated in 2014 when he defended the ISKA Belt and won the Enfusion Belt, solidifying his status as a four-time world champion before retiring with 31 recorded fights.
Tate holds influence within the ‘manosphere’ and ‘alpha male’ community, being recognized as a prominent figure who can mobilize his followers to disseminate his ideas widely. However, he has drawn criticism for his association with right-wing and far-right ideologies, including ties to activists like Tommy Robinson. While he self-identifies as a libertarian, he has been labeled as the “king of toxic masculinity” due to his controversial viewpoints, which have been accused of brainwashing younger generations and perpetuating misogyny. Tate’s remarks on sexual harassment, victim blaming, and gender roles have sparked outrage and condemnation. He gained prominence within the online far-right through appearances on platforms like InfoWars and associations with figures such as Mike Cernovich, Jack Posobiec, and Paul Joseph Watson. Tate’s attendance at events like the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) and connections with individuals like Jacob Wohl have further fueled concerns about his extremist views and affiliations. Accusations of racism, homophobia, and links to organized far-right groups have also been leveled against him.
Personal life
In 2017, Tate relocated from the United Kingdom to Romania, where he operates several businesses alongside his brother, Tristan Tate. He cited a preference for living in countries with widespread corruption and expressed beliefs that he would face fewer legal repercussions, particularly regarding rape charges, in Romania compared to Western countries amidst the MeToo movement. Tate, who has children residing in Romania, occasionally visits them. Despite being raised Christian, he later identified as an atheist but reverted to Christianity by early 2022, claiming to tithe a significant amount to the Romanian Orthodox Church monthly. In October 2022, Tate announced his conversion to Islam after a video of him praying at a mosque in Dubai went viral. Rumors regarding his health circulated in March 2023 after his legal team mentioned a potential lung tumor following a medical consultation in Dubai, although Tate refuted claims of having cancer on Twitter.
In September 2023, Tate voiced support for Russell Brand amid accusations of sexual assault by multiple women. In November, he accused Israel of “genociding” Palestinians and justified Hamas’ attacks on Israel as “an eye for an eye”. In December 2023, during a dispute with Piers Morgan, Tate praised conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, previously referring to him as “one of the greatest men on the planet”.
In January 2024, Tate raised doubts about the portrayal of Nazis as the “bad guys” in World War II. In March 2024, the ADL reported Tate’s teachings, alleging that he perpetuates misogynistic beliefs, akin to those of pick-up artists, asserting women’s inferiority and justifying their abuse.
Legal issues
In 2015, Tate faced arrest following complaints from multiple accusers, including one who presented messages allegedly sent by Tate containing concerning statements. Despite these accusations, in 2019, the Crown Prosecution Service declined to pursue charges for sexual violence and physical abuse, citing insufficient evidence to meet the legal threshold for conviction. The handling of the case received criticism, with apologies issued for investigative delays, although Tate asserted that exculpatory evidence was found on the accusers’ phones.
However, in March 2024, the Tate brothers faced renewed legal troubles when the UK’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court issued an arrest warrant related to allegations of sexual aggression spanning from 2012 to 2015. The brothers were detained by Romanian police following an order from the prosecutor of the Bucharest Court of Appeal. Subsequently, a Romanian court ruled that extradition to the UK could only proceed after a trial for human trafficking in Romania concludes. The Tate brothers maintain their innocence and vehemently deny all charges.
Matthew Jury, representing the accusers, claimed to have received information suggesting Tate’s intention to flee Romania, prompting a request for his detention by British authorities. Jury also urged media personalities like Piers Morgan and Tucker Carlson to reconsider providing a platform to Tate, emphasizing the importance of thoroughly addressing the allegations rather than perpetuating misinformation.
The Romanian investigation into Emory Andrew Tate III and his brother Tristan Tate spans from 2022 to 2024 and involves serious allegations of human trafficking, rape, and forming an organized crime group. The investigation began in April 2022 when the U.S. embassy received a report of an American citizen being held against her will on property owned by the Tate brothers in Pipera, Romania. Subsequent police raids on their property and a nearby webcam studio uncovered four women, two of whom claimed they were being held against their will, leading to an investigation by the Romanian anti-organized crime agency, DIICOT.
In December 2022, both Tate brothers and two women were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking and forming an organized crime group, with one individual also suspected of rape. DIICOT alleges that the Tate brothers recruited women through deception and forced them to create explicit content for websites like OnlyFans. The investigation identified six potential victims, and additional charges were later adjusted to include “human trafficking in continued form,” a more serious offense. The accused deny all charges, while Tate and his supporters have propagated various conspiracy theories regarding the case.
Asset seizures totaling nearly $4 million were carried out by Romanian authorities, including cars, properties, watches, and money belonging to the Tate brothers or their companies. Legal proceedings surrounding the seized assets have seen appeals and reversals, with the case still in the preliminary chamber as of January 2024. The allegations against Tate include repeated rape, control through threats of violence and financial ruin, and the posting of pornographic content to the women’s social media accounts, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
Following their initial 24-hour pre-trial detention, the Tate brothers’ detention was extended by 30 days, a decision they appealed unsuccessfully. Under Romanian law, pre-trial detention can last up to 180 days. The brothers were held in police custody from December 29, 2022, to March 31, 2023.
Throughout the proceedings, the Tate brothers made multiple appeals against the extension of their detention, all of which were rejected. Their detention was prolonged several times, with the justification of safeguarding the investigation and preventing their potential departure from the country.
Attempts to secure bail were unsuccessful, and their pre-trial detention was eventually transitioned to house arrest until the end of August 2023. This was later replaced with judicial control, allowing limited movement within Romania. However, travel restrictions were imposed again but relaxed following an appeal, only to be reinstated and then relaxed once more.
As of January 30, 2024, Emory Andrew Tate III’s appeal to relax judicial control measures and leave the country was rejected by the Bucharest Court of Appeal, with pre-trial restrictions extended for a further 60 days, prohibiting him from leaving Romania.
In February 2023, the legal team representing the Tate brothers confirmed sending a cease and desist letter to at least one of the accusers, threatening a $300 million lawsuit over defamatory statements. This action followed reports of two accusers going into hiding due to an online harassment campaign aimed at intimidating them into silence. The harassment, described as orchestrated by a “troll army,” included threats, doxxing, and the involvement of private investigators.
In July, the Tate brothers filed a defamation lawsuit in Florida’s Palm Beach County against one of the accusers, her parents, and two others, seeking $5 million in damages. The lawsuit alleges that the accused conspired to falsely accuse them of human trafficking and rape, resulting in loss of freedom and income from social media and business ventures.
