Daniel Ezra is a British actor and director.
He is most renowned for his portrayal of Spencer James in the television series All American, which has been airing since 2018.
Early life and Education
Ezra was born in Birmingham, England, with both sets of grandparents hailing from Jamaica.
Career
Ezra showed no interest in acting until he turned 16, when a teacher convinced him to take a role in a school production. On stage, he portrayed Sebastian in *Twelfth Night* and received a nomination for an Ian Charleson Award. After his screen debut in the 2014 television film *Murdered by My Boyfriend*, Ezra appeared in several BBC dramas, including *Undercover* and *The Missing*. In 2018, he had a recurring role in the British fantasy drama *A Discovery of Witches*.
In March 2018, Ezra was cast in a leading role in the American sports drama series *All American*, marking his U.S. acting debut and requiring him to adopt an American accent. To prepare for the role, he immersed himself in South Central Los Angeles culture, carried a football everywhere, and extensively studied his favorite rapper, Nipsey Hussle, who was from Crenshaw, where the show is set. Ezra did not use an accent coach; instead, he relied on listening to Hussle’s songs and interviews. Additionally, Spencer Paysinger, the real-life football player on whom Ezra’s character is based, gave Ezra and his co-star Taye Diggs a tour of his neighborhood to help them understand the local dynamics. Ezra also watched the NFL Network constantly to learn about American football rules. He first realized the show’s success when he was recognized by fans while walking in Times Square.
Personal life
During his childhood, he enjoyed Harry Potter, Philip Pullman books, and The Lord of the Rings. Initially a basketball player, he gave up sports to pursue acting.
