Joeboy is a Nigerian musician recognized for his work in Afro-pop and R&B.
Initially discovered by Mr Eazi through the emPawa Africa talent incubation program in 2017, Joeboy has since made a name for himself in the music industry.
Early life and Education
Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa, born on 21st May 1997 in Lagos State, Nigeria, grew up in the inner cities of Lagos as the youngest of four siblings. Nicknamed Joeboy by his high school peers, this R&B and Afro-pop artist pursued his studies in Lagos and is indeed a graduate, holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
Career
On 26 October 2018, Joeboy dropped “Fààjí,” featuring Mr Eazi, utilizing funds from his emPawa100 grant to produce the music video. His breakout single “Baby,” released on 1 March 2019, amassed 20 million streams on YouTube and Spotify in 2019, with its visualizer surpassing 31 million views on YouTube. Following up, his track “Beginning,” produced by Killertunes, garnered 23 million views for its visualizer on YouTube. Joeboy’s debut EP, Love & Light, released in November 2019, included hits like “Baby” and “Beginning,” along with collaborations like “Don’t Call Me” featuring Mayorkun. He clinched awards like Best Artiste in African Pop at the 2019 All Africa Music Awards and Best Pop at the 2020 Soundcity MVP Awards Festival. In April 2020, he released “Call,” the lead single from his debut studio album, featuring a dystopian sci-fi-themed music video directed by TG Omori. In January 2021, Joeboy announced his debut album, “Somewhere Between Beauty & Magic,” which arrived in February 2021. His sophomore album, “Body & Soul,” hit the airwaves on 19 May 2023, with standout singles like “Sip (Alcohol),” “Contour,” and “Duffel Bag.” Additionally, on 3 November 2023, he released the previewed single “Only God Save Me.” Recently, on 16 February 2024, he dropped the hit single “Osadebe,” gaining nationwide recognition.
Controversy
In October 2022, singer Bukola Elemide, known as Asa, issued a copyright infringement notice to Akinfenwa regarding his song “Contour.” She claimed that the composition of the song was originally recorded by her and the producer Tempoe during a session in September 2020. Asa’s legal counsel sent a notice to Joeboy via mail, demanding N300 million and a removal of the song from digital platforms within 24 hours. Additionally, Asa’s management requested a 60 percent publishing split and a written apology. Joeboy shared this notice on his Instagram story on 3 October 2022.
