Kaoru Mitoma, born May 20, 1997) is a distinguished Japanese professional footballer celebrated for his exceptional dribbling prowess. Primarily operating as a wide midfielder, he is also adept at playing as a left winger or attacking midfielder.
Mitoma is currently a key player for Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League and represents the Japan national team.
Early life
Born in Hita, Ōita, Mitoma was raised in Miyamae-ku, a district in the city of Kawasaki. He joined the Kawasaki Frontale academy at the U10 level.

Mitoma eventually joined Kawasaki Frontale professionally in July 2018, making his debut in 2020 and quickly establishing himself as a standout player. In August 2021, he joined Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion on a four-year deal, initially being loaned to Union SG. Mitoma made his Premier League debut for Brighton in August 2022, marking the beginning of a breakout season where he showcased his talent with notable performances and goals. He continued to impress, receiving accolades such as winning the Premier League Goal of the Month award for August and signing a new four-year deal with Brighton in October 2023. Unfortunately, his season was cut short in February 2024 due to a back injury.
After representing Japan at youth level, Mitoma received his first call-up to the senior squad in November 2021 for 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Oman. He made his debut in a 1–0 away win over Oman. On 24 March 2022, Mitoma scored his first two international goals in a 2–0 World Cup qualification win against Australia. These goals helped secure Japan’s qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Mitoma earned his first start in the following game against Vietnam. He was subsequently named in Japan’s 26-man squad for the World Cup. In a crucial group game against Spain, Mitoma provided the assist for Ao Tanaka’s winning goal, which was initially ruled out but later awarded after VAR review.
Personal life
Mitoma shares a close bond with fellow Japan international and former Kawasaki Frontale teammate Ao Tanaka, who currently plays for 2. Bundesliga club Fortuna Düsseldorf. The two have been friends since childhood, attending Saginuma Elementary School in Kawasaki, Kanagawa. They made a pact to bring pride to Japan as professional footballers.
