King Von, born Dayvon Daquan Bennett was an American rapper and gangster hailing from Chicago, Illinois.
He is renowned as a prominent figure in the drill genre.
Early life and Education
Bennett entered the world on August 9, 1994, in Chicago, Illinois. With six half-siblings from his father, Walter E. Bennett, and three siblings from his mother, Taesha, he grew up primarily under his mother’s care in the Parkway Garden Homes in South Side, specifically in Chicago’s Woodlawn area, often referred to as “O-Block”.
Career
Upon his release from jail in December 2017, King Von was signed to Lil Durk’s Only the Family label, marking the beginning of his affiliation with the group. He then embarked on a series of single releases, starting with “Beat Dat Body” featuring THF Zoo in June 2018. Von’s breakout single, “Crazy Story”, was released in December 2018 and gained significant attention, reaching number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In January 2019, Von was featured on the remix of “Exposing Me” by Memo600, sparking a response from other rappers. Later that year, he collaborated with Lil Durk on “Crazy Story 2.0”, followed by the release of their joint single “Like That” in July.
Von’s debut mixtape, “Grandson, Vol. 1”, was released in September 2019, featuring tracks like “What It’s Like” and “Jet” with Booka600. The mixtape peaked at number 53 on the Billboard 200 chart.
In November 2019, Von released singles like “2 A.M.” and “Rollin” featuring YNW Melly, followed by “Took Her to the O” in February 2020. These tracks were included on his second mixtape, “Levon James”, which debuted at number 40 on the Billboard 200.
In 2020, King Von began working on his debut studio album, “Welcome to O’Block”. Leading singles like “Why He Told” and “All These Niggas” featuring Lil Durk generated significant buzz. The album, released in October 2020, peaked at number 5 on the Billboard 200 chart. Von expressed his dedication to his neighborhood and his vision for the project in various interviews.
Personal life
Due to his father’s frequent incarcerations, King Von’s relationship with him was inconsistent. Tragically, when Von was just 11 years old, his father was killed by an unseen assailant. Von honored his father’s memory in several of his songs.
Bennett was in an on-and-off relationship with Texas rapper Asian Doll, although they were reportedly not together at the time of his passing. He left behind three children, including a son and two daughters.
Legal issues
In April 2014, Bennett was questioned by police regarding the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Gangster Disciples member Gakirah “K.I.” Barnes. However, due to inconsistencies in witness statements, he was not charged.
On July 24, 2014, Bennett was arrested in connection with a shooting in Englewood, Chicago, resulting in the death of Malcolm Stuckey and the injury of two others. He faced charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder but was acquitted in December 2017.
In May 2019, Bennett and Lil Durk were arrested in connection with a shooting in Atlanta. They were accused of robbing and shooting Alexander Witherspoon outside a drive-in. Durk’s charges were dropped in October 2022, while Von was released on bond after spending weeks in jail.
Death
In the early hours of November 6, 2020, Bennett and his entourage encountered Quando Rondo’s group outside the Monaco hookah lounge in Atlanta, Georgia, leading to a confrontation. The situation escalated into gunfire, resulting in Bennett sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries later that day at the age of 26.
The incident also resulted in two fatalities and six injuries, with one individual taken into police custody for Bennett’s murder while receiving treatment for a gunshot wound. The suspect, identified as Timothy Leeks, also known as Lul Timm and affiliated with Quando Rondo, was initially charged but later had the charges dropped under Georgia’s “stand-your-ground” law in August 2023.
King Von was laid to rest on November 14, 2020, in Chicago, Illinois.
