Early life and Education
Logan Alexander Paul, born on April 1, 1995, hails from Westlake, Ohio, born to Pamela Stepnick and Gregory Paul. He identifies with Irish, Welsh, Jewish, French, and German heritage. Raised alongside his younger brother Jake, who is also prominent in the media, Logan began his journey into content creation at the age of 10 with a YouTube channel named Zoosh. Throughout his upbringing in Westlake, he attended Westlake High School, where he excelled as a football linebacker, earning recognition as The Plain Dealer’s All-Star in 2012. Furthermore, he showcased his athletic prowess by qualifying for the state-level Ohio High School Athletic Association 2013 Division I Wrestling Individual Championships.
Career
YouTube
Upon entering college, Paul’s YouTube channel had already gained traction through the platform Vine. Initially majoring in industrial engineering at Ohio University, he made the decision to drop out in 2014 to fully commit to a career as a social media entertainer in Los Angeles. Alongside other Vine stars, he settled into an apartment complex in the city.
Paul’s ascent to fame was catalyzed by his presence on the Vine platform. By February 2014, he amassed over 3.1 million followers across various social media platforms. Within months, his online presence continued to surge, boasting 105,000 Twitter followers, 361,000 Instagram followers, 31,000 Facebook likes, and approximately 150,000 YouTube subscribers by April 2014. Notably, a compilation video of his Vine content garnered over four million views within its first week of posting on YouTube. In 2015, he ranked as the 10th most influential figure on Vine, with his concise six-second videos generating substantial advertising revenue. By October of that year, his Facebook videos alone had accumulated over 300 million views. Paul affectionately refers to his devoted fanbase as the “Logang,” a fusion of “Logan” and “gang.”
In early 2015, Paul made appearances on the television series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and Fox’s “Weird Loners,” portraying the Paul Twins. Additionally, he featured in two episodes of the Freeform series “Stitchers.” Transitioning to the big screen, he starred in the YouTube Red movie “The Thinning,” alongside Peyton List. To refine his acting skills, Paul underwent training with drama coaches and comedy troupes such as The Groundlings and Upright Citizens Brigade in early 2016.
Adding to his creative endeavors, Paul penned the screenplay for an adult comedy titled “Airplane Mode,” dubbed “American Pie for Gen Z” by some and likened by Paul himself to “Expendables with Internet stars.” Initially slated for a 2017 release, the film premiered on August 2, 2019, after facing delays. Alongside his acting pursuits, Paul engaged in various advertising campaigns for brands such as Hanes, PepsiCo, and HBO. In 2016, Comcast acquired the rights to Paul’s short-form digital TV series, “Logan Paul VS.”
In February 2017, Dwayne Johnson humorously informed Paul via a YouTube video titled “Logan Paul has been cut from, like, all of The Rock’s movies” that he had been excluded from all of Johnson’s films. However, Johnson appointed him as the “ambassador” for his upcoming Baywatch feature film. Later that year, on November 23, 2017, Paul released his single “No Handlebars,” which drew criticism for its perceived sexual objectification of women and unauthorized use of a sample from the song “Handlebars” by Flobots. Flobots frontman Jamie Laurie publicly criticized Paul, labeling him as the epitome of “douchebag entitlement.” Despite the backlash and subsequent legal action from Flobots for copyright infringement in 2019, Paul chose not to respond and eventually removed the song from YouTube.
On February 9, 2018, YouTube suspended advertising on Paul’s channels citing a “pattern of behavior,” which included a joke about the Tide Pod challenge, an incident where he removed a fish from his pond to “jokingly give it CPR,” and tasering two dead rats. This suspension temporarily halted his revenue, prompting Paul to broadcast live on Twitch for the first time. Two weeks later, on February 26, ads were restored on his channel, albeit with a 90-day probation period during which his content was ineligible for YouTube’s trending tab.
On November 20, 2018, the first episode of Paul’s podcast “Impaulsive” aired. However, in January 2019, Paul faced backlash for remarks made on the podcast suggesting a “male-only March” and attempting to “go gay for just one month,” prompting criticism from LGBTQ+ organization GLAAD for implying being gay is a choice. In March 2019, Paul released a mockumentary exploring the Flat Earth Theory, interviewing Flat Earthers and speaking at the 2018 Flat Earth International Conference.
In December 2020, Paul was sued by Planeless Pictures over the 2017 Aokigahara incident, alleging that posting the video of a suicide victim was a ploy to escape a movie deal. They claimed the video led to Google suspending their contract, leaving them in significant debt.
Boxing
On February 3, 2018, after his white-collar amateur boxing match with Joe Weller, KSI challenged Paul to a boxing match. Subsequently, on February 24, 2018, it was confirmed that Paul and his brother would face KSI and his younger brother, Deji, in two white-collar boxing matches. The outcome of the first match ended in a majority draw, with two judges scoring it even at 57–57 and the third judge scoring 58–57 in favor of KSI.
For the rematch, which took place on November 9, 2019, Paul made his professional boxing debut against KSI, with the fight exclusively broadcast on DAZN in the United States. Held at the Staples Center, the rematch garnered attention for Paul’s controversial remarks during the UK press conference, where he accused KSI of multiple abortions and made a disturbing comment. This stirred criticism from abortion rights activists, while anti-abortion activists defended Paul. In response, Paul acknowledged his comments as distasteful and insensitive.
The rematch consisted of six three-minute rounds and resulted in a victory for KSI via split decision. Two judges scored the fight 57–54 and 56–55 in favor of KSI, while one judge scored it 56–55 for Paul.
On December 6, 2020, it was announced that Paul would face former five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. in an exhibition bout originally scheduled for February 20, 2021. However, the fight was postponed and eventually took place on June 6, 2021, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Prior to the bout, on May 6, 2021, Mayweather and Paul met at a press conference where an altercation ensued between Mayweather and Paul’s brother, Jake Paul, resulting in a heated brawl.
During the fight, there was constant clinching initiated by Paul, and it went the full distance to the sound of boos from the crowd, with no winner being declared. Mayweather’s superior boxing skills were evident in the CompuBox punch stats, with him landing 43 punches out of 107 thrown (40.2%), compared to Paul’s 28 punches landed out of 217 thrown (12.9%).
In his post-fight interview, Mayweather praised Paul as a tough competitor, while Paul expressed some uncertainty about Mayweather’s seriousness during the bout, wondering if Mayweather had allowed him to survive. Mayweather later admitted to holding back, stating that if it were a real fight, it would have ended quickly in his favor.
On July 28, 2023, it was revealed that Paul and KSI would headline MF & DAZN: X Series 10 – The Prime Card on October 14 at Manchester Arena in Manchester, England. Shortly after, on July 31, it was announced that KSI would face professional boxer Tommy Fury. Following this, on August 8, it was disclosed that Paul would square off against American mixed martial artist Dillon Danis.
During the lead-up to the fight, Danis stirred controversy by repeatedly sharing photos of Paul’s fiancee Nina Agdal with other men, some of which were explicit. Consequently, Danis faced legal action for his actions. The bout between Paul and Danis concluded in the sixth round when Danis attempted an illegal chokehold after a takedown. This led to security intervening and a brawl ensued, resulting in Danis being disqualified and Paul declared the winner.
WWE Success
Since his WWE debut on the April 2, 2021, episode of SmackDown, Paul has been involved in various feuds and storylines.
Initially aligning with Sami Zayn, Paul made his presence felt at WrestleMania 37, celebrating with Kevin Owens after Owens defeated Zayn before receiving a Stunner from Owens. Later, on the September 3, 2021, episode of SmackDown, Paul returned to WWE as Happy Corbin’s special guest on “The KO Show,” assisting Corbin in attacking Owens.
In February 2022, it was revealed that Paul would team up with The Miz to take on Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio at WrestleMania 38, where they emerged victorious. However, Miz turned on Paul after the match.
Paul signed a multi-event contract with WWE on June 30, 2022, and sought revenge against Miz at SummerSlam, defeating him. He then challenged Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at Crown Jewel on November 5 but was unsuccessful, despite a highly acclaimed match.
After returning from injury at the Royal Rumble in January 2023, Paul made a memorable impact by eliminating Seth Rollins. He later turned heel at Elimination Chamber, costing Rollins the United States Championship. This led to a match between Paul and Rollins at WrestleMania 39, where Paul lost. However, he signed a new multi-year contract with WWE shortly after, expressing his desire to win a WWE championship.
In the 2023 WWE Draft, Paul became a free agent, allowing him to appear on both Raw and SmackDown. He made his return on the June 19, 2023, episode of Raw, announcing his participation in the men’s Money in the Bank ladder match, although he was unsuccessful in winning.
Following a match at SummerSlam where he defeated Ricochet, Paul shifted his focus to the United States Championship. After defeating Dillon Danis in a boxing match, Paul challenged Rey Mysterio for the title at Crown Jewel. On November 4, 2023, at Crown Jewel, Paul won the United States Championship by using brass knuckles on Mysterio.
As champion, Paul announced a tournament to determine his first challenger, which was won by Kevin Owens. At the Royal Rumble, Paul retained the title against Owens via disqualification after Owens was caught using brass knuckles. Paul later qualified for the men’s Elimination Chamber match, where he was eliminated by Randy Orton but returned to cost Orton the match.
At WrestleMania XL, Paul successfully defended the United States Championship against Randy Orton and Kevin Owens in a triple threat match with the assistance of IShowSpeed.
Controversies
On December 31, 2017, Paul uploaded a vlog to his YouTube channel featuring the deceased body of a man who had died by hanging himself in Aokigahara, known as the “suicide forest” in Japan. Originally intended as part of his “Tokyo Adventures” series, the group had planned to camp in the woods but found the body instead, prompting them to alert authorities and cancel their plans. The video garnered 6.3 million views within 24 hours but faced severe criticism from celebrities, politicians, and the YouTube community for its insensitive portrayal of suicide victims.
Additionally, Paul was condemned for other inappropriate behavior during the trip, including climbing onto a moving forklift, undressing in public, engaging in a physical altercation, and throwing objects at passersby, including a police officer. Numerous petitions were launched urging YouTube to delete Paul’s channel, with one gathering over 720,000 signatures by February 9, 2018.
In response to the backlash, Paul removed the video and issued apologies on Twitter and YouTube on January 1 and 2, 2018, respectively. YouTube released a statement on January 9 condemning the video and announced measures to prevent similar content circulation. Paul faced consequences, including removal from Google Preferred, postponement of his film “New World Order,” and termination of his role in “Foursome” and “Logan Paul VS.”
Following the controversies, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer delayed the release of the film “Valley Girl,” in which Paul had a role. Reflecting on his actions, Paul expressed to reporters from TMZ at LAX on January 15 that he had learned from his mistakes and felt he had been treated fairly. When questioned about deserving a second chance, he asserted, “Everyone deserves second chances, bro.” In an effort to demonstrate his commitment to change, Paul donated $1 million to suicide prevention agencies, with a portion allocated to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Additionally, he enlisted the help of Mike Majlak, a former Marketing Manager at LoveSac, to assist in safeguarding against future mishaps and improving his public image.
On February 4, Paul made his official return to daily vlogging on YouTube after a three-week hiatus. YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki clarified on February 12 that Paul had not breached YouTube’s three-strike policy and therefore did not meet the criteria for platform banning. However, in the aftermath of the suicide video controversy, Maverick Apparel, a brand catering to juniors and children, threatened legal action against Paul for his clothing line’s name, “Maverick by Logan Paul,” alleging confusion among consumers and a significant decline in sales.
In September 2021, Paul launched an NFT-based game called CryptoZoo, which he claimed to have been developing for six months. However, the game faced ridicule for its use of stock images and received a lukewarm reception. By December 2022, Coffeezilla, a YouTuber known for exposing cryptocurrency scams, released a three-part series revealing that despite raising millions from investors, the game was non-functional. Criticism ensued, particularly for marketing the game towards children and allegations of inflating cryptocurrency values. In response, Paul disputed the claims in a video, threatening legal action against Coffeezilla but failing to address the game’s developmental issues. He later deleted the response video and issued an apology on Twitter in January 2023, promising a $1.3 million refund to NFT holders via a “rewards program,” which commenced in January 2024.
In the same month of January 2023, Paul faced criticism when his former pet pig, “Pearl,” was discovered abandoned by The Gentle Barn Sanctuary in California. Rescuers found the pig suffering from a potentially life-threatening uterus infection, which has since been treated. Despite online backlash, Paul denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he had responsibly rehomed the pig when he moved to Puerto Rico in 2021, and was unaware of subsequent rehoming.
Personal life
In October 2015, Paul resided in the same Hollywood apartment complex as fellow social media influencers such as Amanda Cerny, Juanpa Zurita, and Andrew Bachelor, along with roommates Mark Dohner and Evan Eckenrode, facilitating collaborations on their videos. By October 2017, Paul and Eckenrode had relocated to an estate in Encino, California.
Paul has described himself as a Christian with a moderate level of religious commitment. In February 2021, he announced his move from Los Angeles to Dorado, Puerto Rico, citing California’s high taxes as the primary reason. By June 2021, he was residing in a $13 million mansion there.
In 2022, Paul began dating Danish American model Nina Agdal. He proposed to her at Lake Como in Italy in July 2023, and they announced their engagement on Instagram. In April 2024, they revealed that they were expecting their first child, a girl, in the fall of 2024.
Regarding his health, Paul has mentioned tearing the cartilage in his knee while playing football, requiring a three-month break from school. He also disclosed in February 2019 that he suffers from long-term brain damage resulting from his high school football days, impacting his ability to empathize and connect with others, according to his diagnosis by Dr. Daniel Amen. Additionally, he sustained an injury to his right testicle while attempting a stunt for his Vine channel in 2014.
