Mason Greenwood is an English professional footballer playing as a forward for Manchester United in the Premier League.
Early life
Mason Will John Greenwood was born on October 1, 2001 in Bradford, West Yorkshire, and grew up in the Wibsey area of the city.
Career
Greenwood joined Manchester United at age six, starting at the club’s development school in Halifax. Advancing through the academy ranks, he joined the Under-18 squad for the 2017–18 season despite being eligible for the Under-16s, and finished as the U18 Premier League North’s top scorer with 17 goals in 21 games. In May 2018, he was named Player of the Tournament as United’s youth side won the ICGT Trophy in the Netherlands.
In July 2018, Greenwood joined the first team on their pre-season tour in the United States, making his non-competitive debut as a substitute in a match against Club América. He signed his first professional contract on October 2, and in December, trained with the first team under José Mourinho ahead of a UEFA Champions League match against Valencia.
Greenwood made his competitive debut on March 6, 2019, as a substitute in a Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, becoming the second-youngest player to represent United in a European competition and the youngest in the Champions League era. Shortly after, he made his Premier League debut against Arsenal. Greenwood was named Premier League 2 Player of the Month for April 2019, and received the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award. He made his first senior start on the final day of the season against Cardiff City.
Greenwood scored his first United goal in a Europa League match against Astana, becoming the club’s youngest ever goalscorer in European competition. He scored again in the Europa League against Partizan Belgrade and netted his first league goal in a draw with Sheffield United. Following the COVID-19 suspension, Greenwood played in all six of United’s matches, scoring four goals in three games, including a brace against Bournemouth and a goal against Aston Villa, becoming the fourth player aged below 19 to score in three consecutive Premier League appearances. Greenwood switched from the number 26 shirt to number 11 in September 2020, joining a prestigious list of players, notably Ryan Giggs.
Greenwood scored his first goal of the season in an EFL Cup match against Luton Town and his first Champions League goal against RB Leipzig. He scored his first league goal of the season in a match against West Ham United and his first FA Cup goal of the season against Liverpool. By his 20th birthday, he had scored 32 career goals for United, with only Norman Whiteside and George Best scoring more as teenagers. Greenwood was nominated for the Kopa Trophy, finishing fifth. On January 30, 2022, Greenwood was suspended by United following an arrest. On September 1, 2023, he joined La Liga club Getafe on loan and debuted in a league win over Osasuna.
Greenwood represented England at the under-15, under-17, under-18, and under-21 levels. He made his under-21 debut in September 2019 and scored his first goal for the team in November. He was named in the senior England squad for the first time in August 2020, debuting against Iceland. Greenwood and Phil Foden were later withdrawn from the squad for breaching COVID-19 quarantine guidelines. Greenwood was not selected for the September 2021 World Cup qualifiers but remained in consideration for future selections.
Personal life
Greenwood is of Jamaican descent. Coming from a family with a sports background, his sister Ashton is a track athlete. In July 2023, Greenwood revealed that he had become a father, having a child with his girlfriend.
Legal issueOn January 30, 2022, Greenwood was accused of assault by his girlfriend through a series of posts on her social media. The posts included images and videos of apparent injuries, along with an audio recording where a woman tells a man, identified as Mason, that she does not want to have sex, to which the man responds aggressively.
Later that day, Manchester United suspended Greenwood, and he was arrested by Greater Manchester Police on suspicion of rape and assault. On February 1, he was further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill. In response, Nike suspended its relationship with Greenwood, and EA Sports removed him from its FIFA games.
On February 2, Greenwood was released on bail pending further investigation. Nike ended their sponsorship within a week. His bail was extended to mid-June in April 2022. In August 2023, Manchester United’s CEO Richard Arnold stated that the alleged victim had requested the police to drop their investigation in April 2022.
On October 15, 2022, Greenwood was arrested for allegedly breaching his bail conditions by contacting his accuser. The same day, he was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and engaging in controlling and coercive behavior. Initially remanded into custody until November 21, he was granted bail on October 19 under conditions not to contact witnesses and to reside at a specified address.
On February 2, 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against Greenwood, citing the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence that had emerged.
