Controversies
In February 2022, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) apprehended MohBad, Zinoleesky, and four others at their residence in Lekki, Lagos, on charges of possessing illegal substances, including MDMA and cannabis. Viral videos on social media depicted NDLEA operatives forcibly entering the musicians’ home in Lekki, with witnesses reporting the arrest occurring without search warrants and alleging mistreatment of the Marlian singers by NDLEA officers. The musicians were seen being forced into waiting trucks after being hit with clubs and hearing gunshots fired into the air.
NDLEA confirmed the raid, stating that their operation targeted an area in Idado estate where Naira Marley’s associates reside. According to an NDLEA spokesperson, cannabis and MDMA were discovered in their apartment and car. MohBad, Zinoleesky, and the other detainees were subsequently released.
Following his departure from Marlian Records, MohBad accused his former manager, Naira Marley, of assault in October 2022, claiming that Marley ordered individuals to attack him after he announced his intention to hire a different manager for his music and business affairs.
After MohBad’s passing, reports surfaced that he had filed a police report in June 2023 alleging assault by Samson Erinfolami Balogun, also known as “Sam Larry,” a music promoter associated with Marley. MohBad stated that during a video shoot, Balogun led a group of armed men who claimed to work for monarch Oba Elegushi and assaulted him, damaging his property. However, police stated that MohBad failed to attend a subsequent meeting to address the allegations, and Balogun and others accused of assault filed a defamation complaint. Oba Elegushi distanced himself from Balogun and expressed condolences on MohBad’s demise.
