Early life and Education
Muhammadu Buhari was born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Nigeria. He attended primary school in Daura and Mai’adua before proceeding to Katsina Model School for his secondary education. Buhari then enrolled in the Nigerian Military Training College (now Nigerian Defence Academy) in 1962. He also attended several military training institutions both in Nigeria and abroad, including the U.S. Army War College in Pennsylvania.
Career
Muhammadu Buhari had a distinguished military career before entering politics. He rose through the ranks in the Nigerian Army, eventually becoming a Major General. Buhari served as Nigeria’s military ruler from December 1983 to August 1985 after leading a military coup that overthrew the civilian government of Shehu Shagari.
