Oluseye Desmond Sodamola, professionally known as Spinall (stylized as SPINALL and formerly DJ Spinall), is a prominent Nigerian disc jockey, record producer, and songwriter.
He has released six studio albums and collaborated with numerous artists, including Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, and Asake, among others.
Early life and Education
Sodamola was born in Lagos as the third of five siblings. He completed his primary and secondary education in Lagos State before moving to Ogun State to pursue a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Olabisi Onabanjo University, where he earned his BSc. Additionally, he studied at Tenstrings Music Institute.
CareerSodamola first rose to prominence in 2004 as a radio DJ at Raypower 100.5 FM. He later studied at Tenstrings Music Institute and joined Industry Nite, where he promoted underground talent at weekly events.
In 2014, he founded TheCAPMusic, a record label and management company, signing several producers the following year. Known as Top Boy, Spinall released his breakthrough single “GbaGbe E” featuring Burna Boy in 2014. He has since collaborated with numerous artists, including 2Baba, Wizkid, Wande Coal, Davido, Mr. Eazi, Tiwa Savage, and Kizz Daniel.
From 2015 to 2018, Spinall released several albums. His debut, “My Story: The Album” (2015), featured hits like “Oluwa,” “Gba Gbe E,” and “Money.” His second album, “TEN” (2016), included tracks such as “Package” featuring Davido and “Ohema” featuring Mr. Eazi. “Dreams” (2017) followed, with singles like “Opoju,” “Calm Down,” and “Gimme Luv.” His fourth album, “Iyanu” (2018), featured the hit “Nowo” with Wizkid and “Baba” with Kizz Daniel.
In 2015, Spinall became the first African DJ to perform at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, and toured five U.S. cities. He was the official DJ for the 2017 BET Awards and gained worldwide attention for his role in pioneering Afrobeat. In 2019, he headlined a show at XOYO in London and performed at the Glastonbury Festival. He signed with Guinness Nigeria as a Smirnoff brand ambassador from 2015 to 2019.
Spinall’s third album, “Dreams,” was released on 8 October 2017, featuring artists like Niniola, Wurld, Ycee, Wizkid, and Davido. He held his first “Party of Your Dreams” event in 2017 and continued the series in 2018 and 2019, including a headline concert in London.
On 24 October 2018, Spinall shared details of his fourth album, “Iyanu,” featuring Wizkid, Kizz Daniel, Davido, and others. He signed an international deal with Atlantic Records UK and a publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music UK, becoming a Pepsi Nigeria brand ambassador.
In 2019, Spinall appeared in Beyoncé’s documentary “Making The Gift” and was the first Nigerian DJ to perform at Glastonbury. In 2020, he was inducted into The Recording Academy’s class for the Grammy Awards and discussed the Grammy Award at an Apple Music event.
On 13 May 2022, Spinall released “PALAZZO” featuring Asake, achieving significant chart success. He opened for Bruno Mars in Australia, DJed for Jay-Z’s Oscars after-party, and closed the 2022 MTV Europe Music Awards.
In 2023, Spinall released his sixth studio album, “Top Boy,” praised for blending African and Western musical elements. He signed with Epic Records and released the single “Loju” featuring Wizkid. Spinall performed at major festivals, including Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival, Listen Out, and Coachella 2024, becoming the first Afrobeats DJ to perform at the latter.
Personal life
Spinall’s first exposure to music came as a child when he listened to vinyl records played by his parents. He recalls, “In the morning, my dad would wake up, open the drawers, and start playing some Fela Kuti and King Sunny Adé records.” This experience shaped his musical interests and fueled his passion for music, which further developed after watching a DJ he had hired to play at his high school.
