TG Omori, also known professionally as ThankGod Omori or Boy Director, is a Nigerian cinematographer and music video director.
He has directed music videos for a diverse range of recording artists in the new generation, including Olamide, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tekno, Kizz Daniel, Fireboy DML, Falz, Timaya, Naira Marley, Asake, and more.
Early life and Education
ThankGod Omori Henry originates from Cross-River State in Nigeria. He was raised in Agungi, Lagos State, Nigeria, coming from a middle-class background. His journey into directing began at the age of 15, overseeing stage plays in his school and church. Despite facing challenges early on, including being advised by his father to work as a waiter at a restaurant, Omori persisted. He started creating videos at the age of 16, but it wasn’t until he turned 20 and graduated from the PEFTI Film Institute that he pursued filmmaking professionally, becoming one of Nigeria’s youngest professional filmmakers at the time. Omori emphasizes that the camera is merely a tool and not the primary creator in his work.
Career
In 2019, TG Omori made a significant impact on the music scene, with approximately half of the videos featured on the summer 2019 charts Countdown on MTV, Soundcity, and Trace attributed to him. He directed videos for various artists, including the controversial track “Am I a Yahoo Boy” by Naira Marley, “Totori” by Olamide & Wizkid, and “Soapy” by Naira Marley, which clinched the Viewers’ Choice award at the 2020 Soundcity MVP Awards Festival. His achievements in 2019 also earned him the title of Video Director of the Year at the City People Entertainment Awards, and he directed two videos that made it to the top 10 most-viewed Nigerian music videos of the year.
In 2021, TG Omori continued his success with the release of the North African remix video featuring ElGrande Toto on November 4, 2021. Shot in Lagos and directed by Omori, the video quickly amassed over 34 million views within a month of its release on YouTube.
